It does look great, the barricade scene is mostly well done (I mean, the director is Lewis Milestone, I expect no less), and there are some good performances, but most of that is incredibly short lived. It would not be until this year that I listened to or saw anything new Les Miserables related. needless to say, missing out on seeing it in person remains one of my biggest regrets ever, as that 10th Anniversay Concerts is among my favorite filmed things ever, several songs rank among my favorites (Ruthie Henshall's I Dreamed a Dream ranks second only to Ilene Woods' A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes), and when I read the book in high school, it easily became my favorite I ever read.īetween the concert films and the dreadful 1998 movie, I saw and was incredibly impressed by the 1958 French version (even if the dub I saw on YT was awful and it was in pan and scan.), which is the closest to the book thus far, and even caught the 1935 version on TCM, and I really like that one.
